It’s not about a happy ending, it’s about respecting the character arcs and narrative developments of the show, and to give us a cohesive theme. George’s writing has never been shock for shock’s sake. There are events you don’t see coming, but in hindsight they always make sense. S5-6 started to show frays, and most of S7-8, if not all, have made absolutely no sense at all.

Nigel Wayne To be fair D&D are not directors (altho they did direct an episode each, and apparently are co-directing the finale? [big yikes]). They’re the showrunners– writers and producers– which is the bigger artistic voice in a tv series.

I don’t think anyone was expecting a happy ending, what most people wanted was an unexpected ending. Some twists and shocking moments. This season has felt very direct and simple to me. Still entertaining, yet missing something important that the other seasons had.

And I do believe the fact that there are only six episodes, despite the longer length, factored into the “rushed” feeling.
